One of the joys of playing an Assassins Creed game is seeing how its gameplay is influenced by the particular historical period it's set in. Valhalla is set in the late ninth century, and with its Viking protagonists it feels more like a conventional medieval RPG - along the lines of, say, The Witcher 3 - than the Assassins Creed games.
Which isn't to say it doesn't have the franchise's unique identity: it may have a Game of Thrones vibe, but it's still full of parkour, stealth and assassination. So, is this the perfect first game to grace the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launches ?
Our quick review
Ubisoft may have sacrificed a modicum of Assassins Creed's finesse to Valhalla, but it made up for that by giving it character.
Which just might make it the perfect lock game. His take on medieval England proves to be an ideal place to escape the realities of pandemic-ridden 21st century England.
